How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes Properly: A Quick Guide for Beginners

Dirty makeup brushes don’t just mess up your looks — they collect oil, old makeup, and bacteria that can irritate your skin. Cleaning them regularly keeps your makeup smooth and your skin healthier. Luckily, the process is simple and doesn’t take long.

1. Gather What You Need

You don’t need expensive tools.

You’ll need:

  • A gentle liquid soap or baby shampoo
  • A small bowl
  • Lukewarm water
  • A clean towel
  • (Optional) A brush cleaning mat or glove

2. Wet the Bristles — But Don’t Soak the Base

Hold the brush with the bristles pointing downward.

Why:
Water entering the metal part (the ferrule) can loosen the glue and cause shedding later.

Rinse only the tips under lukewarm water.

3. Clean With Soap

In your bowl, mix:

  • A bit of soap
  • A splash of water

Swirl the bristles gently in the mixture.

If using a cleaning mat:
Rub the brush back and forth over the textured surface to loosen trapped makeup.

4. Rinse Until the Water Runs Clear

Hold the brush under running water, bristles down.
Gently squeeze the bristles to remove excess product.

Keep rinsing until the water has no trace of foundation, powder, or pigment.

5. Reshape the Brush

This step keeps your brushes looking new.

With your fingers, lightly pinch the bristles back into their original shape.

6. Let Them Dry the Right Way

Lay the brushes flat on a towel, with the bristles hanging slightly off the edge of a table.

Avoid:

  • Drying them upright (water can drip into the handle)
  • Using a hairdryer (it can damage fibers)

Flat drying keeps the shape intact and protects the glue.

7. How Often Should You Clean Them?

  • Foundation and concealer brushes: once a week
  • Eyeshadow brushes: every 1–2 weeks
  • Lip brushes: after every use
  • Beauty sponges: at least twice a week (they hold more bacteria)

Final Thoughts

Cleaning your makeup brushes doesn’t just protect your skin — it improves makeup application, extends the life of your tools, and keeps your overall routine feeling fresh. Once it becomes a habit, the whole process takes only a few minutes.
